WhatsApp MCP: how to connect Claude to your WhatsApp
A plain guide to WhatsApp MCP: what it is, what an AI assistant can do once connected, and how to link your number and connect Claude Code in minutes.
If you have searched for a WhatsApp MCP, you are probably trying to do one specific thing: let an AI assistant such as Claude see your real WhatsApp conversations, so you can ask it about them instead of scrolling. This guide explains what that means, what you can ask once it is connected, and the short path to getting there.
What a WhatsApp MCP server does
MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is an open standard for giving an AI assistant tools. An MCP server is a small service that exposes those tools. A WhatsApp MCP server exposes tools such as listing your recent chats, reading the messages in one chat, and searching your contacts. The assistant decides when to call them, based on what you ask. You never copy and paste a conversation into a prompt.
What you can ask once it is connected
Because the assistant can call real tools, your questions can be about your actual messages. Which chats are waiting on a reply from me? What did the supplier say about delivery dates in last week's thread? Summarise everything customers asked about pricing today. Find the contact who sent me the invoice photo. The assistant lists your chats, opens the right one, reads it, and answers from what it found.
Self-hosted bridge or hosted connector
The part that takes the most thought is how the connection is made, because that decides how much you have to trust it. There are two common shapes. Some open-source WhatsApp MCP servers run on your own computer: you link your number to a bridge program, the messages are kept in a local database, and your assistant talks to that. That keeps everything on your machine, and it also means you maintain the bridge, keep your computer on, and handle updates yourself. The other shape is a hosted service, where you link your number once and connect your assistant to a server address. Agent Messenger is the hosted kind.
Step 1: link your WhatsApp number
Linking your number works the way WhatsApp Web does. In Agent Messenger you start the connection, a QR code appears, and on your phone you open WhatsApp, go to Linked devices, choose Link a device, and scan it. There is no WhatsApp Business API account to apply for, no developer account, and no message template approval queue. Your number is connected as soon as the scan completes.
Step 2: connect Claude Code or another assistant
Connecting the assistant is the second step, and it does not involve copying an API key. Agent Messenger shows you a server address on its connect page. In Claude Code you add it with one command: claude mcp add --transport http agent-messenger followed by that address. Start a session, use a tool or run /mcp, and Claude Code opens a sign-in page in your browser. You sign in with the same account you use for the dashboard and approve access on a consent screen. The same flow works for Codex, Cursor and VS Code, and for other assistants that support remote MCP servers with OAuth. A published connector for the Claude app and for ChatGPT is not live yet, so today the coding assistants and other MCP clients are the way in.
Choose what the assistant is allowed to do
The consent screen matters, so read it. Access is split into three scopes. Read covers connected accounts, chats, message history and contacts. Manage lets an assistant organise contacts, tags and campaign drafts without sending anything. Send lets it send messages and start campaigns. You can grant only Read, which is enough for summaries, search and catching up, and nothing the assistant does can reach further than what you approved. You can revoke access at any time.
Safeguards worth knowing about
Two safeguards are worth knowing about before you give any assistant access to real conversations. First, a message to more than one recipient has to be previewed first: the assistant sees exactly who would receive it, and it cannot skip straight to sending. Second, every call the assistant makes is written to an activity log that you can read, including calls that were refused. If an answer ever looks wrong, you can see what it actually read.
Honest limits
WhatsApp's own terms and policies still apply to your number, so connect only accounts you are authorised to use and read the terms. The assistant sees what is in the chats you let it read, so think about which account you connect. And an assistant can misread a thread like any reader, so for anything important, ask it to quote the message it is relying on.
Try it
To try it, create an account, link your WhatsApp number with the QR code, then follow the connect guide for your assistant. The first useful question is usually the simplest: ask it which of your chats need a reply.
